From Cybersecurity to Scalable Success: Meiran Galis on Tech Salescraft

In the latest episode of Tech Salescraft, James sits down with Meiran Galis, Founder of Scytale AI, to explore his incredible entrepreneurial journey. From his roots in Tel Aviv, Israel, to building a thriving global business, Meiran’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and calculated risk-taking. With insights drawn directly from his experience, this episode provides invaluable lessons for anyone in technology sales, recruitment, or entrepreneurship.

The Early Days: From EY to the Birth of an Idea

Meiran’s path to Founding Scytale AI started in the world of cybersecurity audits and compliance. While working at EY’s Technology Risk department, Meiran encountered the recurring challenge startups faced in achieving compliance. Founders and CTOs were often overwhelmed by the complexity and speed required to meet compliance standards.

During his time at EY, Meiran worked with technology companies across Israel and the United States, gaining a deep understanding of their pain points. As he put it: “CTOs, they’re not looking for a compliance automation platform. What they’re really looking for is someone that can take this out of their mind and off their plate.” This realisation planted the seeds for Scytale AI, a company designed to streamline and simplify compliance for startups.

Learning from Life’s Experiences

Before EY, Meiran’s journey included diverse experiences that shaped his entrepreneurial mindset. His time in the Israeli military-built endurance and resilience—qualities that became essential in his startup journey. Afterward, he worked in airport security, a role that honed his analytical and problem-solving skills.

Taking a break to travel through South America, Meiran discovered even more about himself. The physical and mental challenges of hitchhiking and trekking taught him endurance and adaptability. “It made me learn a lot about connecting with people, finding strength in difficult moments, and building a mindset of resilience,” he shared. These lessons, while learned in unique environments, became foundational as he faced the unpredictability of building a startup.

Building the Foundation of Scytale AI

When Meiran decided to leave EY and start Scytale AI, he faced the daunting task of transitioning from a stable corporate job to the unpredictable world of startups. As he described it, “It’s tough. Life takes you from one place to another, and you gain experiences that you don’t realise will help you until later.”

His first steps as a Founder were crystal clear: hire the best CTO, define the product’s architecture, and secure a first customer. Despite challenges, Meiran found his ideal CTO, someone who approached every challenge with optimism and a solution-oriented mindset. “Everything is possible,” his CTO told him, embodying the can-do attitude Meiran was looking for. This partnership became a cornerstone of Scytale’s early success, ensuring the company’s technical foundation was solid.

Lessons in Leadership and Talent Recruitment

One of the most critical aspects of Meiran’s journey was his ability to build and lead a high-performing team. Recruiting top talent was essential, and Meiran didn’t take shortcuts. He conducted nearly 30 interviews before hiring his CTO and placed immense importance on finding individuals who aligned with his vision and work ethic.

Meiran also emphasised the importance of adaptability in hiring. For instance, Scytale’s decision to establish a significant team in South Africa—now larger than their Tel Aviv operations—demonstrates his strategic approach. Leveraging local expertise while fostering a strong global culture allowed Scytale to scale effectively. By recognising the strengths of different regions, Meiran ensured the company’s growth was not just rapid but sustainable.

The Role of Technology and Human Insight

Scytale AI’s unique value proposition lies in its combination of cutting-edge technology and human expertise. While the company’s platform automates compliance processes, Meiran recognised that many clients needed more than just software—they needed guidance.

“A platform is a tool, but the real pain is having someone who can take it off their plate,” he explained. By integrating human consultants alongside the technology, Scytale ensures its clients achieve compliance efficiently while maximising value. This approach not only set Scytale apart from competitors but also created lasting relationships with its customers, who saw the company as a trusted advisor rather than just a service provider.

Overcoming Challenges as a Founder

Entrepreneurship is rarely smooth sailing, and Meiran’s journey was no exception. He admitted to working tirelessly during Scytale’s early days, often feeling like he was working even in his sleep. Yet, the challenges invigorated him. “It was tough, challenging, but so fun,” he said.

Meiran’s ability to adapt and learn quickly was evident in his approach to go-to-market strategies. Initially focused solely on the technology, he soon realised the importance of sales, marketing, and building a strong company culture. These adjustments allowed Scytale to close its first year with impressive results: 34 customers and over $400,000 in ARR. This success validated his vision and set the stage for further growth.

Scaling Globally: The South Africa Strategy

One of the most fascinating aspects of Scytale’s growth has been its expansion into South Africa. While many Israeli tech startups focus on traditional markets like the U.S. and Europe, Scytale established a large operational team in Johannesburg. This decision was driven by Meiran’s connections and the high-quality talent pool in South Africa.

“We have about 50 employees in South Africa, covering roles in sales, marketing, customer success, HR, finance, and more,” Meiran noted. This strategic move not only diversified the company’s operations but also provided Scytale with a unique competitive edge. By tapping into the South African talent market, Scytale demonstrated the importance of thinking beyond traditional boundaries in recruitment and growth strategies.

The Importance of Authenticity and Connection

Throughout the episode, Meiran emphasised the value of authenticity in leadership and business. “If you keep it real, people can connect with you,” he said, reflecting his approach to building relationships with clients and employees. This principle has been instrumental in fostering trust and loyalty, both internally and externally.

Meiran’s commitment to authenticity extends to his leadership style, where transparency and genuine connection are central. This approach has helped create a culture at Scytale that prioritises both innovation and collaboration.

Vision for 2025 and Beyond

Looking ahead, Meiran’s goals for Scytale are ambitious. He aims to double the company’s revenue, customer base, and team size while expanding into new markets. Scytale plans to incorporate AI frameworks into its offerings, further enhancing its ability to provide actionable insights and strategic support to clients.

Meiran’s vision extends beyond technology. By blending AI-powered automation with human expertise, Scytale aims to remain a trusted advisor to startups navigating the complexities of compliance. As he put it, “It’s always about the value—understanding our customers’ pains and helping them get where they want to be.” By focusing on this value-driven approach, Scytale is well-positioned to redefine the compliance space.

Advice for Aspiring Founders

For those looking to follow a similar path, Meiran’s advice is simple yet profound: embrace responsibility. “Taking responsibility can create pressure, but it’s the key to growth,” he explained. Whether building a team, scaling a business, or navigating market challenges, taking ownership is essential.

He also highlighted the importance of staying adaptable and learning from every experience. Each challenge, no matter how daunting, presents an opportunity for growth and innovation.
